Which Tyres?

  • I were about to ask what alternatives are there to GK as everyone raves gp4000s but i think i will go with the gk.

Is anyone able to say what the difference is between the 26c and 28c tyre? I think ill clearance for the 28s (defy 0 rim)

  • Yep, you'll have room. Ran gk 28s on my Defy.

  • I'm still at fan of the clement strada llg- 120tpi.

  • Cheers.

Off to find any deals for a pair.

  • Cyclestore has em at full price, but with free tubes, if you need em. Think Winstanleys was the cheapest at 24.

  • the challange strada bianca is good in the wet. Not the best like the Pave or the IRC RBCC tyre but pretty damm good. Did Paris roubaix on the stada bianca's and it was damp wither arenberg section very slimey. got through it all without trouble and the the tyre soaked up the cobbles with no trouble. Got 5000km out of those tyres and I only changed them because I fitted guards and they was no clearance for them any more. Best tubed clincher tyres I have ever tried and the only ones I would use again (I dont trust tubed clinchers in general they dont feel right any more and they all seem to let me down).

  • Specialized Roubaix Pro. It doesn't matter what the question is.

  • tried spec tyre not that special in my book. Took it off and went back to a corsa when I rode with tubes.

  • I run 28c GKs on my SS commuter, have been riding icy and wet cobbles the last few days in Ghent without problems. Would buy again.

  • Which reminds me how you think the weather options at the end of this year between Oostend and Turnhout; sunny no frost tailwind?

  • Heh, could be all sorts of ridiculous end of year I think.

Has been fairly unpredictable last couple of weeks. Icy cold now but wind is turning to a pleasant southern breeze which would bring temps up to 10°C but with chances of rain. Last couple of years have been fairly mild and wet round years end. So biggest chance on something like that.

Wouldn't count on tailwind, mostly SSW wet of freezing NNE. Pick one.

  • Swapped my 26" Scwalbe City Jets for a Big Ben rear/Snow Stud front for winter commute to save the gumwalls.
I highly doubt it'll get frosty enough to justify the studs(they're only on the shoulders) but it sounds like you're riding on rice crispies and was only a tenner cos Black Friday. Pumped up hard the studs don't touch the ground unless you're leaning. But leaning is forbidden.
They didn't feel that much slower than the City Jets but my commute is only 4mi on a mix of canal paths and knackered industrial roads so hard to tell.

  • Having read the last few pages I am confused as to the hive mind choice on slightly knobbly CX type tyres for some 2016 on trend mixed on/off road riding. Could be persuaded to try tubeless too, just because my wheels can and I haven't tried yet. Any ideas?

  • Gravelking SK is good and tubeless compatible. Unless you want to go mud plugging, in which case it won't be knobbly enough.

  • Another vote for GKs. 600km. Still look new. No flats. Grippy. Not as lively as my Corsa G+, but you can't have everything.

  • I'm using some Sammy Slicks because they came with my CAADX but they're actually pretty good for gravel and hard mud riding while not too slow on tarmac. The tread is slightly more aggressive than the Gravelking's.

  • I'm a bit disappointed with the puncture protection on my Michelin Pro4 Endurance V2s. I'm getting a puncture every couple of weeks... usually a bit of glass getting embedded and working it's way in through the ride. Can anyone comment on the protection of the gravel king road tyres or am I best going back to the gp4000s for riding through the rivers of glass on the A1000?

  • That's surprising. I'm using the same tyres and they've been faultless, even after seeing piles of glass too late and riding right through them.
To get tougher, look at the Durano Plus, any kind of Marathon, or maybe the RibMo.

  • I changed to Pro4 Endurance due to poor puncture resistance of Conti GP4ks.

I've not had a puncture on the Pro4s yet.

No way I would go back to GP4k unless maybe if I could ever be bothered to change tyres for a nice ride on a dry summer day away from London. Which is highly unlikely.

  • I guess I've been unlucky then!? I'll stick with them for the moment and try to avoid rogue shards.

  • Yes you're unlucky, you can always check your tyres every once in a while to ensure no debris is stuck on it.

  • I have Michelin Pro 4s, too, and as Ed says, with a bit of checking they're fine.

  • I'm riding Hutchinson black mamba cx at the moment. Tubeless, quick, light and nice grip in the wet, would buy again

  • 28c tyres for new road bike build. Want something a bit special, gp4k?

  • Strada Bianca
