  • Hello,

I'm currently seeking help with the club colours for the former Silchester CC. As Calleva was the Roman name for this area might the clubs be one and the same?
    Regards
    Shaun

  • Ron Richardson 1925-2016

I'm very sorry to have to report that my Hounslow clubmate Ron, one of the last surviving members of the Calleva, left us last Tuesday (27th September).

We had known for some time that he was unlikely to make it to his 92nd birthday next February, but it still comes as a shock that we have managed to outlive him.

Without Ron, and a few others like him, the cycling club movement could never have existed.

I hope to write a proper obituary soon, and I'll either post it here, or put up a link.

  • Here's a picture of the Silchester racing Jersey, unfortunately it's in black and white, so not much help with the colours.

So far my enquiries have not yielded any info about the colours, but the opinion is that they had no actual connection with the Calleva.

I'll be seeing a bunch of aged cyclists tomorrow - I will go on asking.

My picture has failed to load. I'll have another try.

  • A second try.

    Yes, there we are.

But the internet knows nothing of the Silchester CC

  • I'm told the Silchester colours were black and orange.

My informant seemed confident that his memory was correct and this does seem to fit the photo above.

  • Hello again,
Just wanted to make sure you got my message and sincere thanks. I'm not a familiar user of the site and hadn't realised you'd replied to my thread until a few days ago.
    With best wishes
    Shaun

  • Obituary

As promised, even though it's late:

    https://www.velouk.net/2017/02/09/dedication-ron-richardson-1925-2016/

I had to think for some time where to post this. I had said I'd post here, but it's not really the right place, particularly because Ron actually spent many more years with the Hounslow, and his contribution as an official was greater with the HDW.

Since the forum does, up to a point, resemble a newspaper, perhaps it should have an obituary thread. I did do a search and found a heading, but I did not feel that the posts there were a great start for this enterprise.

When we lost two leading members (50 x 14 and Big Daddy Wayne) there were many posts expressing sadness at their departure. Would it, I wonder, be appropriate to gather those posts together as the basis of an obituary thread?

  • I used to race in the 90s with Calleva Rc with Steve Cook Craig Hughes And Julian MacGloughlin I’m planning to re-form the club as it seem to have fallen into the eather and I can’t let that happen to my old club I know Steve ran the club for a long time with his dad although I don’t live in Hampshire now it’s still my first and only club I have very fond memories of riding with the boys

  • I wish you luck with your Calleva project. I'm sure you are aware that your nineties Calleva was a revival of the original which sadly faded away in the late 1950's.

If you don't manage to resurrect the club, may I suggest you try the Hounslow and District Wheelers - probably the nearest thing you can get to the Calleva; we still have one very active member who started with the original club.

  • I do realise that it was a revival but I still want the club to live again

  • Hi all. Don't know if this thread is still live. If so I'd love to hear more about the Silchester Cycling club. I am the current Chairman of Silchester Parish Council and we have plenty of people in the village that would be interested in hearing your story. I've come across this thread as there is currently a large Silchester CC trophy on ebay for sale. I was wondering if you were interested..

  • I grew up a stone's throw from Silchester, and still regularly ride around that area when I visit my folks back there.

When I started cycling and still lived in the area, I was totally unaware of the history of Calleva RC at the time. So it would be great to hear more about the club too (if anyone has any knowledge?).

It seems the local cyclists are drawn to clubs like NHRC or the Oakley Pedalers, both of which have large memberships and a wide variety of events; NHRC regularly run 10 mile TT sessions around Mortimer and the OP organise large social group rides.

It would be brilliant to have a club back around there, even if it were to be a purely social affair. I know a lot of cyclists in the area use The Plough and the Arms as stops on routes, perhaps asking some of them may give some ideas on starting something up?

Anyway, there's some great roads in that part of the country although I might be biased having grown up there... I wish I had enough disposable income to buy that trophy!

All the best with your search for information regarding the old club, I hope you get some more information. Have subbed incase anyone else shares any more info.

  • My dad was calleva club champion in 1951, Tony Reaney, I have his trophy....

  • Hello All who contributed to this thread.

A number of items from the Calleva Road Club have come into my possession via a family friend. These are yearly club membership booklets from years 1937 to 1952, souvenir programmes from the annual dinner dance in the late 1940’s and a large number of photographic glass plates. Most of the glass plates (reach about 2.5” x 2.5”) are annotated with locations and the subjects names.

Is this material likely to be of interest to the Brooklands Museum mentioned previously in this thread?

    Many thanks in advance
    Jackie
