@edscoble thanks for the gearing explanation. I pretty much find the easier gear too easy, then shift up and find myself grinding for a while. So maybe a bigger ring would help. I won't do anything too rash, see how I get on for a bit.
Your option is that when it time to drop your bike in for a free service, you can ask them to fit a new 54t Brompton chainring and chain (need to be longer, I think 102 link).
Shop should fit those as part of the free service.
