Winter pug!
So I got this great little frame in practacally NOS condition from FireFlyMarty,
The plan was to build a run about for my girlfriend but with the frame in such great condition it was hard not to buy a few nice parts. This had the potentetial to be pretty bling...
So having heard such good things about V-Sprint Wheels I used the forum code to get a good deal on a set.
It was always going to be a fixed build so unmachined 40 back and machined 30 front. Both in silver.
Toyed with the idea of getting black parts but you can't beat silver in the sunlight...
Got the quondo hubs - good reviews but they feel a bit rough.
With hindsight i'd probably pay a bit more and get sealed hubs next time.
Got a chainset off ncjlee, an Andel, apparently a copy of an old campag model, feels strong and light, really happy with it.
Then it was off to my LBS The Red Bike Shop to get a bottom bracket.
They're good guys there, so with a few beers installing the BB turned into the full build!
This led to me cycling round picking up parts from mine, the girlfriend's and bike shops as I realised I had forgotten to bring almost everything with me...
Previous items destined for the build included an old saddle, old bar tape, an ITM stem (now part seized) i'd bought off the forums months ago, a break lever from Condor and a gold bmx chain from Kinoko..
But I had to find a seat post at 530pm on a friday!
Pugs being Pugs I knew it was going to be odd and unfortunately The Red Bike Shop didn't have a 25.2 in stock..
..As luck would have it Push round the corner did. It was 400mm so I will get round to cutting some of it off soon..
My rubbish saddle looked crap so the Red Bike Shop boys chucked a much better one into the mix..
I'd brought in a RX100 front brake from one of my old road bikes but in my over zealous de greesing and cleaning I had almost frozen the unit, the springs werent moving and we couldn't get the front brake to move.
Again thanks to The Red Bike Shop who lent me a brake while the RX100 soaks and greeses..
So with the drive train and cockpit coming together, only my risers hadn't arrived yet, so I put some old 38 drops on the Pug..
When the risers did arrive I had to get them cut down.
(System Ex Risers are massive and quite thin)
Talking to the bloke at the joiners/cutting yard I think next time I will go to a bike shop as it's a bit hit and hope with an angle grinder but I am happy with the end result.
Taped up with a white leather, the bars plugs are squeezed in due to the reletively small tube diameter.
So all good for now until I change the back sprocket so it's 18/44
and I think a new head set is not a million miles away.
Two weeks from start to finish and only the Risers were postal (they were out of stock in Kinoko)
Everything else was LBS or the forum.
I like buying things from people.
Big thanks to Charlie and Igor (pictured above looking mental) for staying late on a friday night, mucking about with seezed components and the like..
Good times.
