Congrats @spares and @rhb for a totally mental escapade.
Well done @Sparky for setting up a new parkrun!!
Nice one @Pifko for a 10 mile PB!
Chapeau @The_Seldom_Killer for spiral madness!
Cap doffed @HatBeard for first run in ages!I did the 10k trail race at the Kendal Mountain Festival last weekend, which confirmed to me that I am terrible at trail running (can't cope with the fear of falling over!). Stunning views, though and a fun morning. Beforehand I got interviewed and for some reason I thought it would be a good idea to talk about how I'd eaten a massive curry the night before and had the fear. WHY OH WHY. Hopefully that will get edited out of whatever that's being used for. Especially as I was wearing my owl bobble hat. SPECIAL.

My mate's just had permission from Worthing Council to hold a marathon in a multi-storey car park in February. 71 laps. Says he's planning a medal with a broken-down car and a syringe.

So many runners, and so many amazing runners!!
Let me join you all, as an overweight (slightly!) 47 yo with a mad wife who has declared that for her 50th we are going to run the South Downs Way next April.
She has an endurance pedigree (100 mile TT champ; good for age marathon runner); I don't...
Training for me started one month ago. Longest run so far was the 3 Molehills last weekend. 14 hilly miles in 2.15 or so. Stiff as a post afterwards, but dragged my sorry arse out tonight for a gentle 8km shake out - heavy legs but felt better for doing it.
Basic plan is 4 runs per week - 2 consecutive mid week evenings - plus Saturday and Sunday (long run). And some blubber loss.
As an aside, I have a 9 year old niece (she might be 10) who has done a 20.01 park run... Makes me feel uber slow!

Well done for starting; that seems to be the biggest hurdle for most. The above plan sounds sensible - You're gonna want to get lots of time on feet. How long is the SDW?

Do plenty walking too, slightly different muscle conditioning.

Betcha not, just run more trails to help your confidence.

A solid hour today at 5.25/km. Legs felt much better. Funnily enough, the bit that I struggle with is the downhills. Rest day tomorrow, so a bit of time with the foam roller.
SDW is 50 miles.

Downhilling is one of those areas that catches a lot of people out. Perhaps because it feels easier. However it uses different muscles and, even if you do downhill training, you can lose that condition quite quickly once you stop.
So see if you can fit in some downhill reps into your training plan. Simple really, just leather the downhill bits and take it nice and easy running back up as you try to recover. Horrible but effective.

Yeah it goes against what I used to believe. I thought that putting more effort into the uphills would result in quicker overall times, as with cycling. But unlike cycling, the extra effort doesn't actually result in much more speed...

One and a half laps of Richmond Park this morning. 13 miles in total. Very steady apart from the downhills, which I pushed. I walked for half a mile after 10 miles just to get used to walking and then running again.
Which raised an issue - I got cold very quickly, and struggled to warm up again when I started running again. I was wearing a thermal base layer, and a long sleeve top. I would be interested in knowing what the longer distance runners on here have settled on as the preferred clothing mix.

V.much personal preference. I'm wicking baselayer plus LS merino layer, plus carry a light gillet / jacket layer for when setting off or pausing.
Others may well still be shorts & vest only.

A vest and running faster if you feel cold.

Any view on the best jacket for running. Pretty sure I have to take one for the SDW, so might as well get one now for winter miles.

Rainproof or just another warm layer?
If a.w.l then a gillet to keep breeze off torso works well. If rain consider taped seams plus hood. Montane Minimus, OMM Kamleika(?), Inov8 sonethingorother seem to be 3 popular. Alpkit just released one too. I carry Montane for FRA rule races but for (shorter length) training just a gillet & accept that i'll get wet.

Another week, another PB!

15 secs shy of my sub40 10k goal. Got held up by plodders in the opening lap of the track - My fault really, should have been a few rows ahead before the gun...
Got another chance though - Christchurch Christmas 10K in 2 weeks, and even if I don't reach my goal, at least each runner gets a free xmas pudding :)

Yes, lots. What do you plan on using it for? Do you upload your runs to a Strava like website?
Which model is it too?

Nice work! Sub-40 just a matter of time, especially on a flatter course. Fancy Chichester in Jan? That'll probably be one of my pre-VMLM warm-up races.
A fairly tough but entertaining XC course on Saturday, South of the Thames race at Polesden Lacey National Trust near Box Hill. Despite some cautious running downhill on stony paths with gnarly tree roots covered in leaves, I managed to run 40 seconds quicker than last year, and 25th overall (/300) compared to 36th. 3 more XC races over the next 3 weekends including both Kent and Southern Vets champs. Ironic that being old means I get to punish myself more often. :)
It's currently £199 on Amazon so I'm still deliberating. Do you wear yours as a normal watch/activity tracker as well? That where I think the F35 would be better as it's smaller.
