Drilling fork

Posted on
  • Just got a new Specialized Langster Pro Stealth 2013. Fork is carbon, undrilled. Want to put a brake. Anybody drilled a carbon fork? Now I did google search and somebody has done this to same bike as mine, though some are saying its not good idea. The fork crown is Aluminium by the looks of it, please look at this pic (not uploading)

    Thoughts?

  • You can drill the fork. I wouldn't advise it however. Unless you're know the layup of the carbon fibre it could be a accident waiting to happen. If the carbon hasn't been layed up in such a way to deal with the stress of a brake calliper then a small drilled hole could turn into a broken fork quite quickly.

  • did you look at the picture? hole is aluminium right through. no carbon touched as the carbon is primarily on the fork legs. the guy who did it has replied back 2 years to the post to say all is good.
will drill myself, and take a few pics.

  • Do you have a drill press?

If not, getting the two holes coaxial with the wheel isn't easy.

  • no drill press, let alone decent drill bits as I attempted to drill, albeit very slowly, and got maybe 5-6mm through the front and the tip of the drill bit broke off in the hole!??!?! WTF.
So its stuck in there for now, probably just leave it, sell it.
So I have a Specialized Langster Pro Stealth 2013 carbon track fork for sell people. Small superficial hole in fork crown, cosmetic only.

  • I've a clamp on brake for bikes which don't have drilled forks!!!

  • hi got round to drilling the fork :) :). So at the moment it is 6mm front and rear of fork. The brake caliper is 6mm so goes in nicely. It needs a recessed nut at the rear for the brake bolt. Haven't got this recessed not at moment. Now to my knowledge recessed bolt is 8mm wide and will need to 10mm drill bit to drill 1mm deep for it to "recess" into fork? That right?
May have a LOOK HSC 3 full carbon fork for sale if anyones interested, 1/8, about 230mm steerer.
