Could I get away with sticking a very mild riser bar on an S model without needing to recable brakes and gear?
The cable housing were cut at a very specific length so it fold perfectly, so you might need to get the M type cableset and carefully trim it a bit.
As for the handlebar, you need to find a riser that is 22.2 all the way right until the clamp area, as oppose to 22.2 until the end of the grip part, otherwise it's nigh on impossible fitting them on an Brompton stem.

Ah, good to know! Dunno how it'll be on a longer ride, but the front's a bit lower than my roadie which has me worried when the plan is for 18 or so miles a day...

I think I vaguely remember someone here using these https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/handlebars/thorn-mk2-comfort-handlebars-254mm-clamp-620mm-satin-black/
To add some rise to an S type. Not 100% sure but don't think they needed new cables. They also upgraded the shifter to an SA one. It would be in this thread if you can be bothered to trawl.

Photo doesn't look promising (the clamp area).
18 miles a day on a Brompton, that's quite a lots for a Brompton. If it's still new. Perhaps talk to your shop about changing the handlebar for an M-Type.

I've got Campag carbon cranks on mine, with a Centaur 115mm bottom bracket.

Perfect, thanks!

Picture please!

BTW, forget to mention, you'll need a new chain too, check the wear on your chain as you may need to replace the sprocket too.
With 54t, you'll need a 100 link chain for the 3 speed, for the 2 speed, 102 link.

Not sure, will have to work it out, someone had fitted one before didn't they?
-
• #2413
Yeah think you need 118mm
There's only one version of Octalink, right?
-
• #2414
The Brompton one is 119mm to use with their chainset, but I cannot comment on whether that stupidly expensive track crankset will be fine, there's more than one length apart from the track one.
Have I mention how stupidly expensive it is? The trade cost is as much as a Langster on trade at work.

Any tips for keeping the front hinge clamp nice and smooth? It's feeling a bit stiffer to twist around, not sure if the water/salt has got to it...
-
• #2416
Maybe worth getting it replaced, in the meantime, a dollop of GT85 does the trick.

I have a sartorial dilemma for my first ride in on my Brompton tomorrow. It's gonna be drive - ride (0.5 mile) - train - ride (9 mile). Got a shower and office clothes at work.
Do I bib tights and L/S jersey and accept that train people will think I'm a pervert? Or do I civvies and put up with discomfort and potentially pisswet/dirty clothes? If the former, do I wear some dignity shorts over the top of the tights? 🤔

I used to admire @Brave approach of full head to toe Rapha Pro Team
If my commute was longer I'd full on Lycra the shit out of it as it's way more comfortable and practical - fuck people thinking you're a pervert, only you know your real perversions. So long as you don't take them on the train, no one will be any the wiser!

• #2420
Trade cost of what? The crankset? Or the bottom bracket?
-
• #2421
If you're going option 1 then I'd go shorts on top. Added bonus that you'll have pockets when fumbling with brompton, bag, wallet, tickets, etc.
-
• #2422
Yeah, was thinking that but don't really have any shorts... I ordered some troy Lee Mountain bike shorts on black Friday but they've obviously not arrived yet.
Guess I'll just walk around thrusting things in everyone's face on the train tomorrow, see how weird it is.
Any recommendations for shorts to wear over lycra that won't wear through or poke me with things?

Swrve.

Trade cost of what?
The crankset, it's north of £230.

Your commute is much longer than the average Bromptoneer, I'd wear what you feel comfortable with.
