Got it, Cheers!

I thought you could use Hollowtech BBs with GXP?
Could you be thinking about the FSA chainset which are also 24mm?
-
• #554
Exactly that. I was getting the setup on my bikes confused, the Genesis (still for sale!) has FSA cranks and an Ultegra BB.

Which sub 100€ track/SS cranksets, if any, are tester approved? Tempted by the RD2 messengers https://www.bike-mailorder.de/sugino-rd2-messenger-kurbelgarnitur-schwarz?number=029892002531&gclid=Cj0KEQjwpZO_BRDym6K_nMye7cEBEiQAVA7RaJ-TSDu7hQmnJuquBHyEmVOnslUZzrkmu4gjmPnrR-oaAojH8P8HAQ Are they any good?

Alfine

Meh, I know this thread is all about functionality but I really dislike the look of alfine cranks :/

Buying Shimano spds for cyclocross and touring.
Will I get anything out of buying 540 or even XT instead of 520 as I normally do? -
• #559
If you're happy to spend more, the Lasco chainset is cheap enough, but you'll need to buy a bottom bracket whether the Alfine come with it.
-
• #560
No, there's no real difference between them. Although if you're willing to spend the money; go Time ;-) XC4 should be within budget.
-
• #561
520 has a plastic lockring, 540 has metal. Otherwise identical!
-
• #562
Cheers! I'll keep these in mind but the project in question is kind of on hold anyway, so I guess I'll just wait for some second hand 75s or some other 144bcd set to show up in the classifieds.

Don't 540s have a different axle?
-
• #564
All my non-race bikes are with 520 pedals and all my shoes with Shimano cleats. I cant justify swapping system right now.
Will consider the slightly lighter 540 for my cx then.

Yes, and given the tiny price premium you might as well get 540. Also, they just look more expensive, out of all proportion to the actual price difference. It's a little bit of bling which makes it look like you chose your pedals rather than getting them thrown in with the bike.

£15 isn't exactly tiny tho.

You could pay for a BB to be fitted for that kind of money.

True, you could get your BB changed for that, but the actual difference is £12 (£19.99 vs. £31.99 from the major UK mail order outlets). This is the #tester_approved thread, and I approve of paying £12 extra for a superior axle/bearing system and nicer looks.

Are there any Tester Approved™ brake pads for callipers and alloy rims? I tend to just buy any old Shimano compatible ones at the moment.

Swissstop green or blue

• #573
Swissstop green shirley?

• #574
both swisstop green and the scoble approved koolstop salmon things are better than shimano stock options in my humble opinion...

Tester Approved™ brake pads for callipers and alloy rims
Other people are more qualified to comment, I'm still on the OE pads on all my rim braked bikes because I make so little demand on them. For 99% of my riding, I'm either on a TT course or I'm on an MTB with discs.
UT bearings are a sliding fit in the cups, if anything is going to rattle or creak it will be bearing/cup rather than cup/shell
