Not really the plan. I figure money in a bank is not doing anything but losing value. Some people buy gold. Why not a house in Scotland which we can use on weekends/summer? Running costs shouldn't be more than a couple of k a year at most. Renting would mean we couldn't use it. Maybe AirBnB would be enough to cover those costs and we'd break even (which would still be an improvement on money in the bank).

Consider how many weekends you realistically want to use it vs how often you would have to go up for maintenance etc, and if there is a gap between the two whether you'll need to hire someone to look after it. My parents used to have a holiday home but ended up selling it when they found they were having to go up every other weekend to miw the lawn, air rooms etc. And that was only 1.5 hrs drive.
