Lighter, cheaper, more compact. Surely a better bet for imported beers, especially regarding shipping costs.
Don't get me wrong, if I saw a lambic or similar in a can I'd run for the hills. But I've had many great beers from a can.
Also meant to keep the beer better.
It's like corks vs. screw-tops in wine. Screw tops are better but people are horrified by them because they think it automatically means cheap wine.
