I stuck a non standard chainring on my Brompton, but the plastic chain guard seems to help keep the folded bike together nice and firmly, as the hook on the front fork nestles up against the guard.
I took the guard off my old Brompton, I'm sure I didn't have this problem. Perhaps I just have a wonky Brommy :0)
