  • S1L is a good bet, but I'd look into an S2L as having two speed is pretty useful, especially in London.

Don't forget firm suspension block, wouldn't want you to bounce all over the place would we?

  • very nice.
my seatpost sleave has just gone...makes me v jealous of your sparkly new Brommie!

  • Hmmm... how accurate is this? 75" as standard seems awfully high.

  • Well just from a couple of test folds and unfolds there was a big black rubber mark on the BB shell where the still spinning rear tyre hits it when it's folded.

Thats with the standard Brompton tyres, got a set of marathon greenguards cheap to go on there next.

  • It is a bit high, especially from starting at traffic.

This is why I recommend the 2 speed one.

  • Usually you would pull the brake before folding it.

  • 110mm OLN ish ,yep. The chain tension will change when you fold it, but that's what the chain tension is for. As long as you've got decent chain tension/slack without the tensioner when it's unfolded, the tensioner is irrelevant. The chain tensioner just takes up the slack when you fold it. Basically, it's a magic gear with a chain tensioner to take up the slack when you fold. I've found 54/13 (I think) works nicely.

  • 2,125.1km so far on a fixed Brompton. One minor pedal strike so far. #don'tlean

  • What is this? a forum for fixed gear and single speed?

  • Edit. Shit joke. Nevermind.

  • I liked it!

  • It's a little high from standing start but seemed alright. Will feedback after a few commutes.
    Need luggage now.....

  • I've found 54/13 (I think) works nicely.

    That might explain it.

I had a Moulton with a fixed drivetrain, similar to the gearing of the seven gods (67GI), and it was fustrating being spinny and bouncy, it felt like there's a dead spot in every stroke.

Your high gearing may have reduced that considerably.

  • Yeah - I found it surprisingly smooth and very uncharachteristically Brompton bouncy spinny!

  • Ordered a 40t chainring, that'll bring the top gearing down to under 67GI.

  • I am thinking about gearing up my S2L, best way would be a bigger chainring right?

  • But I like it like it is......

  • Shimano 7710 crankset & 55T Olympic Zen FTW

  • That's a bit rich for my blood. Haha!

The standard cranks are fine, just need a bigger chainring. What BCD are the standard cranks? 144?

  • Ha - I have illusions of grandeur to how I can now pimp this Brompton - full carbon seatposts etc - but I think all that'll do is detract away from the fact that it's such a utilitarian piece of kit.
From what I remember working in a Brompton dealer for a while you can get the chainrings from most stockists at quite a reasonable price (compared to a ZEN!)

  • Awesome ta, I'll have a look.

  • My Brompton is a commuter machine but unloved and totally stock. I make sure I maintain it so it works but nothing more, the love goes to the other 6 bikes..

  • I stuck a non standard chainring on my Brompton, but the plastic chain guard seems to help keep the folded bike together nice and firmly, as the hook on the front fork nestles up against the guard.

I took the guard off my old Brompton, I'm sure I didn't have this problem. Perhaps I just have a wonky Brommy :0)

  • do it! EC1 is after PIMP bikes!

(don't do it, keep the cost down so its affordable for me later)
