Right, I reckon a Gavanelle diy job is definitely a possibility using one of these Sturmey thumbshifters.
The Sturmey has a bit of adjustability built in and I think the Gavanelle does too and it'd be difficult to retain this but is it really necessary?
Cut a hole in the lever in this shape
Insert this part from inside the lever, place the black bit with the cable stop over and then attach the shifter of your choice?
Will actually try that out. I have some 9s sturmey thumbies and a set of Tektro levers. Will report back.
