Schoolboy error a couple of days ago- set off in 25 degrees, having checked the general forecast and seen nothing to be concerned about. What I should have done was to search the forecast for the peak we were heading to. A Rapha gilet over a Rapha one-piece (the new one which I probably won't wear again due to its "automatic opening" function when you have anything on top of it that knocks the zip to "display my gut") wasn't optimal for 3 degrees, driving rain and strong winds (from some perspectives). We got back down, but I was shivering so hard the only way I could straighten the bike up once it started shaking its head was to let go of the bars, concentrate hard, then grab the bars again and persuade my fingers to pull the brake levers.
23 degrees today, half the elevation, rain jacket in back pocket.
On Pico Valetta last year, I went from high 20s / low 30s, to 1 degree at the top. I had packed a gilet and base layer, and was saved from freezing too badly because descending gravel tracks is a slow business. But I couldn't feel my hands, face, or feet.
