• Did anyone else encounter the big oil slick at the east end of Surrey Canal Road (at the quietway crossing) last night? I was hammering it to get to Goldsmiths for a lecture and there was another cyclist shouting 'get off your bike, you have to get off your bike', and at first I thought he was telling me I couldn't cycle across the (mixed use) pedestrian crossing... then I saw a moped driver holding up his bike and looking very sheepish as the oil flowed downhill in three directions. Slippy/10.

In other news does anyone know how to get oil off of a Rapha rain jacket? Some flicked up from the guy in front of me.

@Batt did you get a better deal from your clients when you turned up looking like a bruiser hard man with battered knuckles?

  • Iso propyl alcohol is your friend. Often sold as 'rubbing alcohol'. Spot test it first to make sure it doesn't damage the fabric.

I saw the slick last night as it's round the corner from my house. Looked like a tanker had split: all clean-looking engine oil, and masses of it.

  • Thanks! I think you're right - the moped I saw was probably the slick's first victim. There didn't look to be any tanker around, so it's possible that whoever caused it just fucked off and left it.
