  • Apropos winter tights, Vulpine have some Hoy ones in their black friday sale. No idea if they're good or not, but seem to have positive reviews (nice price too): (http://www.vulpine.cc/uk/mens/all/hoy-vulpine-men-s-roubaix-bibtights-in-graphite)

  • +1 this. Well worth the £98. Much better fit than the Mavic Equipe ones I bought previous, for more money

  • I wasn't expecting it to function as a rain jacket, but it lacks even a minimal level of water
resistance in my experience. I guess once that DWR coating is gone that's that.

I have the rain jacket, race cape and city rain jacket. All are fairly boil in the bag once you put any effort in.

I find it remarkably not breathable but good if no indoor seating in the cafe in the sticks as the beans are cold before me.

I guess we're all different. I'd only ever wear it below 10C and find it breathes well enough for my pro-mmuter pace. Sat outside a cafe in one I'd freeze to death!

  • I really rate the classic wind jacket. I wore mine for the Manchester to London ride this year, and got rained on for pretty much the first 130km through the Peaks. Was supprisingly dry and comfortable for the whole day. When it stops raining you can unzip it and the wind drys you pretty quick.
It wasnt cold though that day though..... It would have been a tough day if it was cold.
It's great for the mountains too.

But as @Señor_Bear says, it aint a proper rain jacket.

  • Depends what you're after or how the climate is (or how your body regulates temperature and what kind of riding you are doing). Some days I prefer a base + longsleeve + rain jacket and others a longsleeve base + PTJ.

True buyer status is only achieved when all of the above can be layered.
    color coordinated

  • You can check them out next time I'm lapping you.

  • which is why I've seen the back of your legs whiz by loads of times and I stand by my earlier comment.

  • It has an 'unexpected' look. I like that.

  • money-can't-buy experience

Are you talking about the insulated brevet gilet?

This Black Friday stuff is all very well, but I just want an insulated brevet gilet dagnammit!

There is stock in my size on the U.S. website, quite tempted to ask a colleague to pick one up for me when they go over...

  • This Black Friday stuff is all very well, but I just want an insulated brevet gilet dagnammit!

my point exactly, there is a full length version now ..

  • Wonder how it compares to offerings from OMM, etc.

  • Don't want a full length version, would be too hot :(

  • goreapparel.co.uk/gore-bike-wear/men/one-gore-tex-active-bike-jacket-with-shakedry/JROFOC.html

I have one. It's the best rain jacket ever made. AND you never have to re-proof it.

  • Gabba £70 at Wiggle in the dodgy colours (which aren't too bad actually).

  • Probably one of the reasons i don't use my IBG more is the lack of arms. Even with merino arm warmers, unless i have a long sleeve jersey on too my arms are frozen

  • Schoolboy error a couple of days ago- set off in 25 degrees, having checked the general forecast and seen nothing to be concerned about. What I should have done was to search the forecast for the peak we were heading to. A Rapha gilet over a Rapha one-piece (the new one which I probably won't wear again due to its "automatic opening" function when you have anything on top of it that knocks the zip to "display my gut") wasn't optimal for 3 degrees, driving rain and strong winds (from some perspectives). We got back down, but I was shivering so hard the only way I could straighten the bike up once it started shaking its head was to let go of the bars, concentrate hard, then grab the bars again and persuade my fingers to pull the brake levers.

23 degrees today, half the elevation, rain jacket in back pocket.

  • All of that sounds horrendous, especially the bit about your gut.

  • Good until you need to wear a backpack...suggestion is not as durable as traditional breathable fabrics

  • At Mantel.com all the colours in all the sizes, £68 delivered...

  • Ha - gotta love climbing high peaks.

On Pico Valetta last year, I went from high 20s / low 30s, to 1 degree at the top. I had packed a gilet and base layer, and was saved from freezing too badly because descending gravel tracks is a slow business. But I couldn't feel my hands, face, or feet.

  • The Gore One is breathable. "Extremely breathable" according to their marketing.

  • Int @Gustav saying would love that very nice Gore One jacket because I boil in mine (what he calls traditional breathable jackets) but they didn't make the Gore One strong enough to wear with a repack so he is out?

  • I think your skin is not breathable.

  • You suggesting he is a #mouthbreather ?

  • That was fun; if you are going to give 85% discounts on Classic bibs you should definitely give me free beers whilst doing it.
