It's really simple.
- ISP Modem goes into modem mode.
- ISP Modem connects to EdgeMax and the EdgeMax takes over router jobs
- EdgeMax runs your DHCP, Firewall, inbound VPN, networks, DNS proxy
- EdgeMax connects to a single Switch
- Connect everything to your Switch

The EdgeMax does allow you to go nuts... complex configs, like multiple networks in a building, but for a home system you only want to use 1 port on the EdgeMax.
