  • The key thing...

    The EdgeMax Router... every ethernet port is a physically distinct network.

    Meaning a distinct IP range on each port.

    i.e.

    Eth1 = 192.168.1.1-192.168.1.255
    Eth2 = 192.168.2.1-192.168.2.255

    Typically, you want a switch after the EdgeMax so that you run a single network if you expect devices attached to different WiFi access points to talk to each other.

    If you are all Mac, and that is using Bonjour or other auto-discovery stuff... then you do want everything on the same network.

  • It's really simple.

    1. ISP Modem goes into modem mode.
    2. ISP Modem connects to EdgeMax and the EdgeMax takes over router jobs
    3. EdgeMax runs your DHCP, Firewall, inbound VPN, networks, DNS proxy
    4. EdgeMax connects to a single Switch
    5. Connect everything to your Switch

    :)

    The EdgeMax does allow you to go nuts... complex configs, like multiple networks in a building, but for a home system you only want to use 1 port on the EdgeMax.
