Try a few addins such as Ghostery and UblockOrigin in Chrome and see if they stop it.
Personally I don't bother with additional virus software like AVG, the built-in Windows one seems perfectly fine. I'll occasionally run Malwarebytes or Spybot Search & Destroy but that's mainly removing tracking cookies and the like.
