Been a while since I've posted the wife... She's been a bit neglected since the shop closed, but the new 650B project is coming along nicely!

Anyone in here used a retroshift/gevenalle style shifter? Would love to give some a try as I think they'd be a good compromise for the tourer/tandem.

Have only tried them on repair bikes; didn't find them to be very ergonomic. Any reason why you want them over traditional bar-ends?

Nice one! Reminds me of the new surly troll, could be a good frame for a copycat build.

Yep I use them on my cx/ beater/ tourer and love them.
Really reliable, comfortable. Thinking of doing exactly as you are and getting a set for my tandem too.

I love that Dale. ^

Is there a diy tutorial for that shifter hack anywhere?
-
• #13488
Would be quite tricky to DIY it. Would need the mount to be machined.
It's from gevenale/ retroshift

Yeah I've seen you can buy the shifters attached to levers. Havent found anywhere that does the adaptor only though

Hahn Rossman´s mudguards are 62mm Honjo´s not, GB´s.

Good to know. Any chance of being able to give them a try before I throw some money at them? I was also wondering if I can just get the shifter mounting adapter and not the rest of the lever - I have a set of those Tektro levers already.

My thought exactly - I reckon Gevenalle might just sell you the bit you want if you ask them. It's a standard Tektro/Cane Creek lever with a hole drilled through the front.

I've seen a few iterations (can't find any right now). They're usually pretty bad. PPL literally clamping a shifter onto the front of a brake lever. The tricky bit is the outer cable holder (whilst machining would be ideal you can be quite precise with a hand file given time) but as lots of MTB or budget road bike shifters have these built in it seems common to use one of these instead and not DT shifters.

I already have Cane Creek levers and 8 speed bar end shifter+mech and cassette. Was hoping thered be an easy hack but sounds too expensive/complicated to bother. Bar end will be fine I reckon

Why not go for a Hulsroy style MTB shifter attached to a modified front mech clamp?
PAUL makes one too.

They appear to offer something along those lines in the parts section Replacement Brake Hoods, at a reasonable cost

That seems to be referring to the rubber on the brake lever (as well as the big chunk of plastic) but not the machined metal part that @Turkish and I are looking for. We're looking for the bit that they have bolted to the front of the lever blade so as to attach the shifter and sort out the housing. I'll drop them an email and see what they say.

What is the saddlebag used here? Looks awesome.

I'd like retroshift/gavanelle style shifters too but they are a fucking fortune for what they are.
Thought about diying it but I never found an example of a diyed one that looked half decent. I reckoned you could do something with a Sturmey thumbshifter mount or a brazeon downtube shifter mount.

Realistically they'd have to charge you a fortune to make it worth their while. They'll make a bit of money on the markup of the levers of course so to account for that you'd end up paying only marginally less for the machined bit than you would for the whole thing. Basically normal amount less those brake levers at trade price.
You never know though. Good luck.
Appreciated. That other picture is perfect though. The more I look at it, the more I love it.
