I've already bought the MK's in the protection black chilli version, as they were a bargain at £23 a pop....I thought it would be worth trying them, as I'll use them on the salsa if not.....apparently they are a mud tyre....I get what you mean about the tread being in the wrong place, but I won't know till they are aired up. I think the chupas are so bad as they 'float' on the gloop, rather than cut through it to the firmer stuff underneath......
50mm internal? I think your shoulder knobs might end up in a funny place. I've got a 2.4 mountain King II on a 30mm internal rim and I'm not sure I'd like to push that much further.
Edit - Just checked. They're 45mm internal. You could try some of the newer Maxxis 'wide trail' tyres, if you're after something with more tread than the current 29er + options.
