@EstelleGetty that looks like my seimens extractor. I think you're correct those vents are for re-circulation but if you're venting it out they server no function. The outgoing air would come straight from the round outlet on top of the fan unit to a flexible extenstion, which is connected to you ducting.
I wonder if you could turn the stainless steel section with air vents upside down so that they end up being hidden inside the lower section?
