@daveaa thanks for that small but important piece of info. I would like to run a Shimano clutch rear derailleur so the bike's prepared for any rough stuff, which should hopefully mean I just need to remove the mudguards and fit some chunkier tyres.
@Heldring I'm going to look into if 10 speed road shifters with 10 speed mtb rear derailleur (Shadow+ clutch) is possible with an adapter, but if not probably go down the route of 10 speed shifter/cassette with 9 speed mtb derailleur.
Think I've roughly nailed the 1x gearing down to 42 x 11-34/36.
