And no, we didn't cut the chain too short the first time, the actually snipped the whole chain from another bike and had to add the hal-link PLUS another master.

Meh. I've used two master links to cover a range of gears, there's nothing wrong with that per se. Having one of the spring clips backwards and both on the wrong side is the real faux pas.
