  • Alt-right emerged out of Internet messenging boards like 4chan - hence calling it alt-right as a pun on the keyboard combination.

    They spend a lot of time making racist jokes about black people, Jews, gays and feminists, call anyone who they think agrees with those groups a cuck, and generally call everyone 'faggot' or 'fag' (hence, 'newfag') pretty much as a default. A lot of their thinking is basically a mixture of 'The Game'-style PUA nonsense and gamer geekery (remember 'Gamergate'?)

    I think some people thought it was tongue in cheek until they realised that it really wasn't and a lot of the idiots believed what they were saying.

  • The idea of an 'alternative right' had been floating around but I think the 'alt-right' term has caught on because of the pun.

  • We were discussing this at work the other day. The conclusion was that the name is actually from Alternative right, the Alt Key version seems to have arisen after the name.
