Winter gloves

  • I have a spare pair of them (albeit from last year) but they are XL. I guess that would be too much of a step up for you? I tend to buy gloves loose to avoid triggering numbness but I didn't like these much so only used them once.

  • Yeah I think it would be - medium are already fairly loose. Used them again today and they're in better nick than I remember so perhaps I'll get another winter out of them.

  • Regarding the topic of gloves, I've had these over two years and they're solid as a rock! Highly recommended especially during the cold early morning of the past couple of days it has really kept my hands really nice and toasty! (plus i'm a sucker for casual reflective clothing aka my giro republic)

Got mine for a steal of £35 at this place too:

  • Good shout Ho.

Wore the Pro deep winter gloves I've had for a couple of years yesterday and they were defeated after about 90 minutes.

    New gloves time.

  • I had the pro team gloves too, but anything under 8degrees in the morning thoses gloves were a total fail!

Nice a toasty this morning riding in, granted there was some water that went into these giro gloves this morning, but tbh there isn't a lot of gloves that can withstand this much downpour like what we just had.

I've got these and not a fan.....if anyone was going to buy them anyway I'll happily sell them only wore them twice.....

  • Castelli Estremo Winter Cycling Gloves
    Temperature range: -5°C / +5°C

I have been using these for the last 2 weeks, great quality.
In a rain shower still kept my hands dry and warm.
Only Negative I can say is it has velcro strap on wrist. Velcro with lycra or Jerseys is really annoying.

  • @pastry_bot - Thanks for this, I've just ordered the Helly Hansen gloves.

My Craft split-finger mitts are just beyond serviceable so I replaced them with very similar looking ones from Planet X. All good so far used on their own in coldish weather, the only reservation I have is that the XL don't feel massively roomy. Just hope they're big enough with the liners on underneath.

  • Full-finger gloves with gel palms and not too bulky? I guess I'm thinking 'winter' type MTB gloves. Any suggestions?

  • I bought some grib grab hurricane gloves. gel pad, windproof, waterproof for all but proper storms, reflective bits, grippy printed palms, fit well and pretty cheap from wiggle, would buy again.

  • ...Helly Hansen gloves working out great so far, in that I'm dexterous enough to operate keys, laces, zips, Garmin, etc. so I can glove up before leaving the house. They also seem to fit OK under the split finger gloves so I should have my best Raynaud's protection yet.

  • grib grab hurricane

    Ta, I'll have a look.

  • The Giro gloves Ho linked to above fit that brief.

Picked up a pair from London Bicycle Workshop. They are good.

  • I just received my 45NRTH Sturmfist 5s this week.

It's been quite mild this week but when it gets cold again I'll report on how well they do compared to the Rapha Deep Winter + merino liners and Castelli Estremo.

    I'll have a look too.

  • I have these, they are badass.

  • Initial impressions are promising. The real test is a long ride in Surrey when it's like 5C.

Slightly disappointed at the lack of reflective bits for visibility when signalling at night.

  • The key with them is not to let your hands overheat, as they can get sweaty inside which will quickly make your hands go ice cold. I tend carry a second pair of thinner gloves and do a swap when I feel like they are getting too hot.

  • Are there any deep winter gloves that are touchscreen compatible? I've got a garmin and it's a nightmare to use with big heavy gloves when you want to slide between screens

  • I have some mountain warehouse gloves and really like them, probably the same ones you're talking about but I got them a couple years ago so I'm not sure if they still do them. They're called 'softshell touchscreen glove' and as the name implies, they have touchscreen pads on the forefinger and thumb. Rubbery unpadded grip along the thumb, forefinger and part of the palm and they're not too bulky. I've worn them down to around -5C with windchill and still have toasty hands. They are really windproof though so they can get a bit sweaty if it's a bit warm but it's appreciated when it's windy+cold.

Edit: just googled them and it looks like they're still for sale, dead cheap too:

  • i've been eyeing these up. do they work with touch screens? phone, garmin etc?

  • I used the Grip Grab Hurricanes last weekend for 80km of off-road mudfest. Kept me dry for maybe 40-50km, but kept me warm throughout.

  • I like my Giro. Tried them on yesterday. You have to go one size larger from sizing. No large in stock. They had a medium Datum which was exactly my size. Too heavy.

  • All out now.
