@Flange thanks, seen a lot of riders in Bicycle Quarterly with this colour combo wheelset and when I saw Halo made a stealth version of the Vapour I jumped on them.
From what I've researched too it seems that's the case, an 11 spd mtb cassette will fit on a 10spd road freehub. In all honesty I'm not too sure how high a gear I need, I've got a hunch I might be okay with a road compact chainset (50/34) and wide road cassette (11/28), or at least this might be the best starting point. I do like the simplicity of 1x10/11 but suspicious it's a fad and overly self conscious.
@spotter Now we're talking, plus it'll be good for my functional/radavist/insta-game. Realistically though not sure if the benefits of square taper (longevity & length options?) outweigh the solid feeling of an external BB for me personally.

tyres are looking good. I wouldn't rule out 1x10/11 if I was you, I have a choice of
Di2/double/1x11/ss/IGH and would choose 1x11 from now on, no issues with cross chaining, just up and down without thinking about it - bit like a hub gear but without the weight.
42ish on the front and a 11-40t on the back would be my choice for all conditions and 46t for flatish stuff and clutch/type 2 mech for lack of chain slap -

1x11 is interesting (well it is to me, the Mrs says I'm dull as fuck), I've run it for ages on the MTB's and also raced a season on the CX bike - the simplicity is definitely a bonus as is the weight saving. Plus I never use the front mech apart from trimming to stop chain rub (#humblebrag) so it didn't hurt to ditch it. The Sram Rival 1x chainset I've fitted to the Grade is the first time I've used it on the road and to be fair, I'd have been better with the 42t setup rather than the hero combo I've gone for with the 50t (note:I am NOT a hero).
My round trip commute takes in only about 1000ft of climbing but if I extend it, its 42 miles each way with Sevenoaks hill to contend with. At this point I definitely need something smaller as its misery going up there on 50/28. However my brother also uses 1x11 in the Peaks (lowest gear being 42/36) and he's not had any issues at all.
Long story short - yeah, its ok.

I echo all the 1x sentiment above, you could have a solid sram 1x setup with silver cranks.
If you can find silver rival it would all match!

They are solid enough, so solid that the stainless bolts seize in the oxidising aluminium stays from experience - not that it's too much of an issue as you never normally need to take the stays off the guard, but I was concerned of long term durability at that interface though, but mine were still sound after 2+ years of year round commuting.
Although aesthetic is subjective I think the Honjo/VO style is far nicer where the stays fix to the guard.
Also plastic 'p' clips in the Gilles Berthoud are not as nice as the metal ones in the Honjo/VO...
All my opinion of course though.
I have got both GB and VO on 2 bikes... I almost put the VO hardware on my current Gilles Berthoud guards on the daily bike, but decided the additional cost not worth it (have actually used the metal VO p clips at the mudguard eyelets though as I had them spare). -

I've had mine for 4 years with nothing seizing so I guess it's unusual

Apologies for the crude photos but the £10 seatpost from retrobike is a winner. Thanks for all the talk on gearing and praise for 1x. Currently thinking...

This is going to be so good!

Jambon you always seem to build similar bikes to me... classic porteur; neo retro roadie, now a cdf... and you always do it better than me ):
So which mech are you going to use and will you be using a wolf tooth?
Still need to figure mech out to run 11-42 10sp on my MTB

11-42, you plan to climb some mountains? I'd get something with smaller gaps

What seatpost is that? Looks great. Will definitely try you wheels if that's ok?
We need to do a group shoot. Also you should consider one of these

@TM you're just so damn influential, and you're doing it before it's cool, or I catch up. In truth I haven't worked it out gear-wise, just figuring what's best as I go along if it's not obvious! More reading required for me in terms of compatibility and presume you can't go 1x on a standard chainring, which would have been nice.
@Heldring That's quite good to hear actually, looking briefly seems not all shadow/Type 2 rear derailleurs can go up to 42t.
@spotter it's a retro Zoom layback post, just used paint stripper on the logos and polished up in a couple of minutes. Before:

how will you make 5700 work with sram EA type 2 rear mech? And wolftooth chainrings are black ..
-
• #43
@spotter I thought that might be suggested at some point, definitely gives a more classic look. An unlikely comparison but this image partly made me choose 'a normal' silver stem. Will think about it though. Re the wheels, happy to help - just PM me and we'll arrange yeah.

I have a silver 17deg x2 if you want?

Nice work on the seatpost! Silver fc-5800 will look way better with a black chainring I suspect @Amey. If you're unsure about the gearing I'd put it in some calculator and compare it to the gears you normally ride and go a little higher if you plan to go touring in some hillier areas. This build is gonna be great I reckon

Ran 40t with 11-28 10spd, and 42t with 11-32 11spd. Both set ups gave plenty enough range, if your considering a bit of touring maybe 40t with 12-34 or summat similar should work out pretty well, unless you want to ride up walls. Nice lookin build so far.

MS3 cassette was a surprising treat to use, but only makes sense if you load the bike up and hit tricky terrain.

This looks lovely....kind of what I have in mind for the sequoia eventually, but with 650b knobblies (with a gumwall).

its not, I was suggesting 9 speed setup
Really like that wheel/tyre combo, wanted to do similar on the Grade but not enough space apparently...
Anyway, 11 speed - My understanding (and I could be wrong) is that an 11 speed XT MTB cassette will fit on a 10 speed freehub. Obviously that then opens up the opportunity to go for a bigger cassette and run 1x11. If that doesn't work, you also have the option of swapping to an XD driver and running a Sram cassette which will give you (potentially) a bigger range of gears.
I've been running 1x11 on my 5800 105 set up for about 700 miles now and its mint (admittedly with a 12/28 rear block). As for 5800 vs 5700 - i'd go 5800 every day of the week. It's miles better than 5700, in fact its miles better than the old 10 speed DA stuff I had.
