Root it and install a custom ROM seems the obvious. I'd be a little wary of using it if it's so clearly a dubious ROM.
I think this might be the only way forward. i rooted a ZTE Blade a few years ago, I guess it should be pretty easy to do now.
The other option would be just to root it and use something like Titanium backup to remove anything that looks suspicious. I'd just opt for a new ROM if there is a stable one out there though.
