  • Anyone have micro adventures planned for this year?

  • 3 day bothy and distilleries tour round Easter time, all being well.

  • 9 days in the West Highlands end of April beginning of May.
We're doing a mix of wild camping, camping, hiker huts, bothies and B&Bs.
Still planning the route so any suggestions welcome.
Heading up on the sleeper train to Fort William and coming back from Inverness. A day in Glencoe for walkies, Skye for Talisker and wild camp, probably Applecross pass.... That's about it right now.

  • Do you have any details yet? I would be interested to know which bothies and distilleries you go to.

  • My friend who lives in Clackmannanshire is the routemaster, so I'm not sure on the details, but roughly speaking it'll be Dunkeld, Pitlochry, Aberfeldy kind of a loop.

  • my usual - London - Harwich - somewhere in Holland and reverse the weekend before Easter. And it should be on my newly bought Brother Kepler that I snagged today.

  • Non disc or disc?
I've got the disc in sunset fade nearly ready for Scotland :)

  • Wow this sounds amazing, I'd love to do a similar trip, keep us posted with details of the route!

  • @porkypie - do you do that trip often? I'm looking at doing similar myself shortly as I have a friend in Rotterdam to visit, was considering whether to go Harwich - hook and then a short ride, or Dunkirk then cycle up through Belgium over 2 days. Any prior experience of the area and tips etc would be appreciated.

  • @Tomo187
I got the Navy canti version in their offer on Thursday - I'd been about to head out and get an LHT when I saw the deal come up on Instagram.
I'll be porting most of the bits over from my Kaffenback I think - Ultegra 6600 10speed but with a few choice upgrades - new seatpost, chainset (got a very bog standard FSA on there at the moment). Though I do keep looking at what seems like the bargain new Tiagra group...

    @andyfallsoff
I've done it every year for the last 6 years or so - I usually work a half day on the Thursday, head down to Liverpool street - get a train to Colchester and ride over to Harwich, making sure to get fish and chips from Mr Chip. Overnight ferry then - which is a very civilised way to travel, though it does give you an irrational fear of this:
    https://youtu.be/yHFDa9efCQU

after that you get booted off the ferry at about 8, and you're on the deity of your choice's own cycle path, the LF1 about 30 seconds later. What I usually do then is ride to a bakers in Scheveningen, pick up pastries for breakfast and krentenbollen for snacks and ride most of the day (maybe a croque madame and a beer for lunch) - stay in an Nh hotel or similar (points, so cheap) and head out for beer and food.
I'll have a couple of days the same, mixed with a bit of brutal architecture, football and more beer involved, then head back to Hoek for another overnighter and reverse the start.

Over the time I've stated in a few places - Zoetermeer (boring but really handy for lots of places - cheapest hotel), Utrecht (awesome place - whole bunch of us were in an airbnb for that), Bodegraven (home of De Molen brewery and their Borefts festival) and Heemskerk (weird Nh hotel - typical small dutch town).

one odd thing though - while I love cycling round Holland - I found Amsterdam infuriating - chaotic and so many stoned/just plain dumb tourists wandering about to make it like riding through London. Still has the most beautiful social housing though.

In terms of avoiding though - anything around Schipol - bit bloody bleak.

  • If you're going from Hoek to Rotterdam btw - and the wind is against you - don't ride down the Maas unless you like grovelling, there's no shelter at all and it's brutal. Would be a better bet to head inland for a bit where there's the slightest bit of cover (having said that, unless you're super-lucky, you'll be getting battered by a headwind at some point)
