  • Anyone recommend a properly fitting glass screen protector for an iPhone 7? The reviews of the Belkin one on the Apple Store say it doesn't fit properly.

  • Interesting visit to PC World tonight.

I went to look at things in the flesh rather than talk to anyone about anything but there were a few members of staff there that were pretty clued up/horrendously geeky and quite happy to chat to me about my needs without trying to sell me stuff.

Unfortunately it's opened my eyes to the fact that what I want really isn't a sexy, slim line, all in one pc or iMac, but rather a boring but very functional tower pc that I can upgrade as required. Of course, being upgradeable also means I don't necessarily need to shell out for a top spec machine right now, I could go for something with a more modest spec (and price tag) and upgrade it if/when I feel it's needed.

FWIW though they had some 2015 iMacs (and, I think, Macbooks) in stock at the old prices. I almost coughed up for a 2015 iMac with i5 and Fusion drive (the sort of mid spec one) which they had at £1599 (currently £1949 on the Apple site).

  • Just FYI, my hack originally cost 350 quid, and performed the same as the top end iMac. dint look as good ,sure, but if you've given up on that go self build..

  • kinda think hates "the line" but just upgraded mine via the App Store and I'm pissed and had no issues. all used it for work

  • Easy to keep auto update turned off. Also it's not so much of an issue these days as everyone is switching over to the Clover bootloader which lets you install software updates.

  • I chucked some stuff in an ebuyer basket the other day and before I knew it I was at £1100 without peripherals and pretty sure I'd have missed some basics.

    Like an OS.

  • Tell me more...

Follow this link, then choose one of the builds (top five links):

Buy bits, build computer, follow instructions here:

That's it in theory. The only catch is you need a Mac to make a Mac.

  • I looked at all the parts links for a Customac Budget ATX and going i5, 16gb, 500gb works out pretty darn close to the cost of an HP Pavilion with i7, 16gb 3tb + 128gb ssd.

Factor in the fact I wouldn't know where to start with it all and I'd rather go otp.

  • lmao

  • I've got a late 2014 MacBook Air, 1.4 GHz Core I5 with 4 GB of 1600 MHz DD3 RAM and it's so, so slow. Is there anything that can be done to speed this up (using it 90% of the time for web-browsing), or is it bin and replace time as the OS is too much for it's puny power?

  • has it got an ssd? if you dont give a shit about opening it up it's possible to stick one in...

ram is soldered so you won't have any joy with that unfortunately.

  • It's an 128 Gig SSD.

  • reinstall the os is basically the last option.

I would expect a 2yo mac to run just fine for normal use though.

  • I guess you could also try bootcamping it to win 7 if it's not playing well with the updated os x versions.

  • Sell it and get a decent chromebook instead? since you're using it for web browsing 90% of the time and Chrome OS is perfect for this.

  • I would expect a 2yo mac to run just fine for normal use though.

It's dreadfully slow, I just re-started it and it's got better but it's horrendous sometimes.

Interesting that it should not be.

  • Run Dr Cleaner or something like that, Lori's 2010(?) 13" MBP was crawling before I ran a clean and it's absolutely flying now...

  • how much free space is there on your HD?

  • Good question, 128GB is barely enough and get awfully slow when you have around 10GB left.

  • 55.1 GB available

  • Not that then. I would check your activity monitor and see if something is eating the RAM when it's going slow. Also check your startup disk and turn off anything unnecessary that's coming on at boot.

  • This will fix it...

  • intriguing. will give a go on the mrs. air as that is dying

  • Has anyone here tried an external GPU over Thunderbolt yet?
