Maybe that's because the only ones made in the last forty years have been badly made and dedicated to cheap bikes, made of cheese, etc...
I came across older ones that were nice / worked well, accurately made, fairly easy to put together and adjust... But today, apart from the Brompton Pentaclip, I agree it's all crap. Maybe the one in the (mega low res picture) is more special than it look?
