UK adult population is 40m, and aggregate average attendance at premier league clubs last season was 729K. Even if you assume all these match goers were season ticket holders that went to every game (which is demonstrably wrong), 1.8% of adult population goes to games. Factor in:

• not everyone in the UK adult population self certifies as a 'football fan' (a stupidly tribal and primitive thing to do in any event)
  
• The set of people who went to premier league games is obviously far in excess of 729K.
  
• Add in league and cup games not covered
  
• consider there are all the clubs outside the premier league
  
  

Then going to a handful of games makes you a massive plastic.
