• Funny enough on the Dutch "zwarte pieten"... they're not meant to depict slaves but Moors from Spain, where Sinterklaas is supposed to come from even though he's inspired by a Catholic saint in what's now Turkey.

Though other says it's meant to depict freed slaves and yet others chimneys sweeps.

Confusing. I never gave it much thought as a kid, but my school was 100% white. They're changing the character now in some places.

As long as we can still eat the candy they throw to kids from the floor, no excess health and safety please ;)

  • zwarte pieten

Apparently the Swiss have a guy called "schmutzli" (≈"dirty man") who's similar. He's this black guy who'll whip the kids to within an inch of their lives and then drag them off to the woods to be his slaves if they've been naughty.

My brother was there during some election (they have them all the time but this was for central government) and messaged me pics of a few posters. White sheep throwing the black sheep out, a bowl of swiss passports with greedy black hands reaching for them, and so on. Mental.

Edit: I've never been to Switzerland myself and have probably got everything wrong.
