  • You could pick up the last gen for less now?

2015 models still being sold by Apple are more expensive now, unless you can somewhere with old stock (JL sold out, Currys have some).

  • Is looking like second half 2017 will be the best time to buy

    http://www.macrumors.com/2016/10/31/macbooks-2017-price-cuts-32gb-ram/

I will get one in September 2017 along with a new and commensurately underwhelming iPhone.

  • The Kaby Lake chips will be out by then too so there won't be any power consumption excuses for more RAM.

I'm sceptical about price cuts. It might just end up being £100 less or so. It's not like they're going to knock off £700...

  • I can't even read that website, there's a giant add over the page and no way of closing it.

  • Pretty standard for Apple. Wait a year and they will bring out the one you really want (32GB RAM + latest chip upgrade).

I think it is universally understood you never buy R1 Apple kit. Wait for 12 months then buy.

Am hoping SketchApp will update to support the Touch bar, and hopefully will be user defined. Also Touch bar will be great for passive notifications.

  • Will do very soon....

  • My Macbook money has been spent on this instead:

Intel Core i7 6800K Six Core with HT
    EVGA X99 Micro V2, Intel X99 chipset
    16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 2666MHz
8GB EVGA GTX 1080 SC ACX 3.0 MSI GTX 1080
    250GB Samsung 750 EVO SSD & 2TB HDD

    Should be delivered next week.

  • Going to try and Hackintosh it?

  • Nah. I was waiting for the MBP to replace my quad core mini. I was hoping for a mid to high range graphics option on the 13 so i could play a few games (I have an xbox and ps4). I was so underwhelmed that i decided to keep the mini and just buy a gaming pc instead.

Got a bit carried away with specs etc but it means i can pick up a VR headset in the run up to christmas.

  • Yeah, I need to sort out what I want for what too... always trying to streamline my media/entertainment solutions. Ditched the Xbox for a dual boot hack, and now wondering what to get upgrade wise before my iMac gets much older... tempted to double drop the hack, get something daft powerful and a nice big screen (34?). Maybe too nerdy.

  • << I'm sure they're not disastrous and there's a lot of gnashing and wailing that will die down. To be honest i was leaning towards replacing my ancient iMac with a new 27" one rather than a MBP as I really don't have that much need to be portable.

  • The earlier mentioned Dell XPS is £100 off using the code DELLXPS on their site.

I'm afraid that my 6 month long wait for a MBP ends with me buying a Dell.

  • My 2011 Macbook Air has been a little temperamental for the last year. I had been eyeing up the new 'Macbook' for a while and was gutted when the prices were increased following the Macbook pro launch. Found them (2016 model) on John Lewis at the previous prices with 3 years guarantee included - the website says out of stock but I've managed to reserve one to collect at Stratford Westfield later today. Thought that might be useful to know for anyone wanting to get hold of these or the previous model pros with the 3 year guarantee having been disappointed with the latest release + price increase.

Similar thing happened a couple of years ago when I opted to get the 2012 mini rather than the updated non-upgradable 2014 model and JL came to the rescue.

Side note: The problem with my Macbook Air is the power port on the unit itself... any recommendations for repair in London?

  • The xps 15 looks real nice...

  • I have an xbox and ps4

    Baller.

  • I actually have two Xbone's at the moment...

    #swag

  • And the larger of the Razer Blade laptops had a production version where the touchpad is a few years ago.

  • I had my MacBook repaired at TheMacsmiths Hackney Road.

  • Is Onyx still a good general maintenance/ cleaning app or are there any other recommendations? Thanks

  • I've been using Dr Cleaner Elite, works great...

  • I think I need a new router. Is the AirPort the best way to go? Or are there other options I should consider instead?
We just moved and the wireless is terrible, despite the router being situated in the middle of the house.

  • Routers and WiFi provided by ISPs are universally shit, there are no exceptions that I've heard of.

You need to put your ISP modem into "modem mode" then hook up your own equipment.

My current recommendations (been the same for a few years, it still rules):

Ubiquiti EdgeMAX Router is the router, does DHCP, each port is a different physical network, handles firewall, this thing is flawless, fanless, silent, very fast.

Ubiquiti Unifi UAP does WiFi. It is power-over-ethernet so only needs a single cable and isn't too ugly so can be put anywhere. Incredible range, speed, and power.

Ubiquiti ToughSwitch provides cabled ports if you need wired devices and you want to run them off a single network (the EdgeMAX has every port supplying a different network).

Those three, together, basically power the homes of a lot of people at Cloudflare. They are super fast, and are long-term investments as you can take them anywhere and use them. Since buying mine I've been blissfully disconnected from the "What is the best of all the shitty home router/wifi things out there?", now I don't care... it all works.
