  • I've started incurring a lot of expensable mileage through work recently so decided to get something slightly more economical than my rs4. Criteria were: (1) circa £1000, (2) 60+ mpg (3) any mileage as long as well maintained and mechanically sound and (4) not a complete shitbox.

    The front runner was an Audi A2 - I eventually found a decent candidate last week and bought it. Mechanically it seems to have borne it's 157k miles well, but cosmetically its not exactly been primped and preened.

  • Anyone use a hand-held, battery powered vacuum for mucking out the car? If so, and it's any good, what is it?

  • Saw this in Sutton at the weekend. Black and white chess board sort of pattern interior was amazing.

  • They are all terrible. Think the only battery powered ones that sort of work are the £300+ Dyson variety
    Even then....

    Better off getting s small good vac like them German ones, linde / Bissett? And an extension

    A2 are prob on my shopping list, want big sun roof and leather and auto 1.4 tdi, and less than £2k, literally asking moon in the stick though :s

  • Was sexy whatever it's called. Looked absolutely factory fresh inside too, almost too good to be original. I was thinking it must be very hard (read: expensive) to get a factory spec re-trim in that material though?
    Guy driving it couldn't have been a day older than 25.

    Also, note the Rolls in the background that was prepped for wedding duties.. That's my bimmer parked next to it. My girlfriend opened the passenger door and the wind caught it and blew it right open with some force, was probably about 3mm gap between the edge of door and the Roller. Time slowed down when I saw it happening and my heart skipped quite a few beats....

  • Battery in the latest handheld we do (V8) is actually very good compared to the older V6's (and still miles ahead of closest competitors) Easily enough for an estate interior on one charge. A lot of people base their opinions of handheld machines on the performance of very old models, motor and battery performamce has improved massively in the last five years, especially as we design our own motors and batteries from the ground up to work together for good performance, whereas most other companies just buy in motors and batteries from whichever supplier makes the cheapest option. A huge amount of money and R&D went into the development of the V8 motor alone. Probably more than our competitors put into designing a whole machine.

    A lot of companies have been investing heavily into battery R&D over the last few years, as that's the way everything is going.... Batteries are the FUTURE, and whoever makes the next breakthrough in battery technology is going to make a lot of money.

  • Fair enough. Dont mind £££ so long as whatever it is works very well.

    Picked up a free ball mini upright last year in our back alley, was a neighbour got a replacement unit because they didn't understand how the brush button worked, used twice, something like £340 retail and was current model at the time. Looks like a toy but picks up mountains of dog hair with zero effort and is tiny.
    Also perfect for car as handle folds right down so can just use while upright with motor brush bar in the car. Makes vacuum car very easy, no scrubbing to remove dog hair like most vacs.

  • I have a V8, and it has rendered the full size vacuum in my house useless. It gets used for everything!

  • One of the nice things about Porsche is that so much old stuff is still available. There's some German rule that says you must produce all spare bits for cars, even long after they've gone out of production, but Porsche Classic has made an amazing job of extending this. They work with independent suppliers to spec, make and officially endorse everything for old cars, down to the smallest screw that only appeared on one model for one year. And most stuff isn't actually that expensive.

    What you do notice now is since cars like that orange one have become worth six figures specialists have increased their labour rates. Which I guess is fair enough. Economics innit.

  • What do you do at Dyson out of interest?

    On a different note, i bought a 2nd hand pipercross air filter to suit my throttle bodies but annoyingly the spacing from the previous engine it was on was different, so i'll have to replace the backplate.

    The good news is my CAE shifter finally turned up, in all its CNC machined glory

  • I need to get a filter for my throttle bodies to help quieten it down, you reckon don't buy 2nd hand?

    Just seen the CAE, oh fuck I love those so much. I've setup one in an R53 Mini and had a proper go with that one and one in an R56 Mini and they are such a joy to use.

  • I didn't know that, maybe he used that, I'll find out more details.

    He does get a bit ranty so it's possible he just left out the whole BMW app bit. That's pretty awesome that they have that.

  • Yeah similar to the Pipercross PX600 i have. I would buy a new one - if the baseplate doesn't match the spacing on your engine you'll need a new blank backplate and they're a minimum of £25 - I think i've only actually saved a tenner in the end buying 2nd hand.

    I had ramair socks on a set of webers previously and they used to collapse under throttle load and suffocate the trumpets - make sure the one you buy has a mesh liner to stop that!
