Using phone handset whilst driving

but I just don't get why 'repectable' middle class women (and every other fucker out there) seem to think that engaging in an activity that kills and is illegal is acceptable.

Because people have an inflated opinion of their own abilities. They're absolutely certain that they have the spare capacity to look at the phone and drive at the same time. And it's only for a second anyway, and they're stopped at the lights. And. And. And.

Same with speeding. Or with drink driving back when that was just a bit cheeky. We just need the stigma that now comes with drink driving to be applicable to mobile usage too.
