I remember years ago talk of phone companies all agreeing to make their charging sockets universal. Did this ever happen or did I dream it? Can't imagine them ever doing something as simple as fitting a blocker.

Not sure it will ever happen.
That said, the vast majority of manufactures are switching to USB-C. If only Apple joined in...

We've got cars on the way that drive themselves yet we haven't had car companies and phone companies develop a block for your phone when in a car. Clearly by now we've seen that common sense, campaigns etc aren't solving the problem, just stop people being able to do it altogether. Passengers just have to suck it up. Or maybe plug their phone in near to the passenger seat for it to bypass the stop, out of reach of the driver
