Anyone else doing the Upper Thames on the 5th of November?
Will be another stupidly early start. Wondering about driving out but tempted to do a DIY from home instead and save the petrol money.

I would get myself to Croydon
You don't hear that very often. :P
I'll add it to my list. http://www.aukweb.net/perms/detail/WW09/
You would still get nice Grimpeur du Sud Badge if you 5x this year!
Is that based on audax calendar or normal calendar? I can't imagine going to Croydon 5x in a year for a badge.

Random question, but for long-range audaxes would people tend towards mechanical disc brakes over hydraulics for the easier fixing?
-
• #5882
I have hydraulics, haven't given it much thought. What is likely to go wrong with hydraulics in reality when riding on roads, not much really
-
• #5883
Hydro discs or cable rim brakes. Anything else is ickle yucky bums.
-
• #5884
Hydros are more maintenance-free than cable discs. If something does go wrong you're less likely to be able to fix it by the roadside but the chances of that happening are very, very slim.
The only time I've heard someone genuinely promote cables > discs was a salesman convincing me that the Genesis Longitude swapping from hydros to mechanical discs between model years wasn't a downgrade to meet increasing costs but a 'feature'.

Tell ya what. The Great Escape is a tough 200 actually. Felt like no descending, but lots of short little punchy climbs. Which, on single speed, felt hard. I am shattered... maybe something to do with the fact that I've also not ridden in four weeks...!

I've missed the sign up for the Cheshire Safari and it looks like it's full. I was looking forward to a full day on the bike so I reckon I'll just ride it the day before instead.
-
• #5887
ian! did you see me call out to you at the start? i said 'fixie skidder!' or something like that...
u were a bit wrapped up so wasn't 100% it was you...but pretty sure it was! i was there just taking my niece for a walk and didn't realise an audax was heading out. hope you had a good ride -
• #5888
Maybe.
I've been sick so I'm not sure yet. It's also out of town so I'd have to get the train out or drive which sucks. I could ride but it'd turn into a 400k day and that's not going to help my recovery.

I am doing Upper Thames. Long drive. Didn't realise just how long when I signed up...

I recommended audax night riding as a subject for the http://www.nocturnepodcast.org/ and they went and made an episode. It deserves a listen.
-
• #5891
Nice! Gonna listen now.

• #5892
Let us know when part II is up and about.
-
• #5893
Aye, will do
-
• #5894
Definitely! I think I'll also keep it as a thing to send to friend/family who are wondering what is this Audax thing I'm mad about as it rather well explains the concept.
-
• #5895
Cheshire Safari tomorrow (managed to squeeze entry after all) and my klikfix bag mount just broke. Drybag strapped to handlebars it is then... Not nearly as convenient.
-
• #5896
No Cheshire Safari for me - come down with fest flu (or plane flu, or some gross american disease...). Very snotty, going to potter around locally for an few hours instead and try not to cough up both lungs. Urghh.
-
• #5897
Get well soon! The fest (if it's the one I think it is) lineup hopefully made up for the flu

Rode Down to Downs this week to complete Grimpeurs Du Sud, off out on a DIY to Canterbury tomorrow to keep my RRTY on track.

Upper Thames 200k yesterday. Thinking about it it was the first long ride on the TT bike for months and the first long ride for a month. Was actually good to get out, if a little bit nipply. Pretty slow but gotta start back somewhere.

I missed Upper Thames. So far I'm down about £50 in entry fees this year thanks to last minute family commitments :-(
anyone doing this?

if your not feeling too strong in the legs, it's only 100km and fairly easy terrain. in the spring they do the route in reverse, though i've only got 100mtrs of that done before my left crank fell off
