It can, those shifters were made to work with classic shape bar better to begin with.

I think they'd be improved if you mounted them lower down the bend than that, but it's a bit awkward-looking. 9/10sp era Campagnolo would work better I'd imagine - hoods position will be minimally useful with either, but if you spend most of your time in the hooks/drops doesn't matter so much

I could try but I'd rather not un-tape unnecessarily my bars if it's a no no.
