Although if you buy lights they refund the fine...so probably a fairly reasonable incentive scheme (and really what excuse could there be for not having lights?):
Road Safety Sergeant Rob Heard said: ‘The penalty for cyclists found riding without lights on their bikes at night is a £50 fine. ‘However, we run a rectification scheme in Hampshire whereby if a person goes to one of our approved cycle shops, buys a brand new set of lights, gets their penalty ticket stamped on the back and sends it back to police within 28 days then they will not be prosecuted.’
It does seem a good scheme and of course lights are a must. Hopefully people will go to the lbs since they need the ticket stamped.
I wonder if they could have setup a temporary stall with a couple of them?
