  • Why does my freewheel keep breaking?

Commuting on a Charge Plug since May. First freewheel started dragging and making noise so took it to a local guy who swapped it for another cheap Chinese one. That blew up on the way to work after a couple of weeks. Evans near work put a shimano one on; that's been on for about a month and now it's getting noisy. I've squirted GT85 at it but still feels rough.

    Am I doing it wrong?

(Apart from ignoring forum advice to get a Halo clickster)

  • Yes, cheap parts and then you're flushing all the grease out of them if you're spraying them with GT85!

If you want to service them, pull the cover off with the required pin tool and grease the bearings, don't spray them with WD40, GT85 or any other shit that's not a grease.

  • Cheap freewheel is more likely to go wrong, I end up not putting cheap £5 one on customer bicycle and just the Shimano one.

However now that the Shimano one is more expensive, the Halo cost the same and is a lots better, so buy the Halo and run that.

    Or ride fixed.
