The point of it is that the OLED panel will adjust to whichever program you're in. Most of the time, the ESC key will be present in the top left, just like normal!
I'm assuming they'll also build in some sort of customisation though, if they don't, it won't be a week before someone else has. Then you can have the entire top line be an ESC key if you want :)

I wouldn't dismiss it at this point – there will probably be a setting for having the traditional F-row permanently. The escape key is too important to too many users to just drop it flat out.
I'm guessing if there's a piece of software that doesn't support it, it'll just default to traditional F-row.
Damn, was waiting for these and really considering finally buying an Apple device.
But... no ESC key!
How, how will that work with VIM? Or Emacs? Or... just anything?
Will I have to rebind CAPS LOCK as ESC and wipe out muscle memory of 20 years?
I'll wait a couple of days for the full details to arrive and the initial feedback... but I fear I may end up with a Dell and continue to run Linux.
