  • sure, do you mean from centre of bb shell or outside of shell?

  • Thunder burts are awesome tyres. pretty fast on road to boot.

  • sos, I meant from the rear wheel axle actually, but Google tells me it's about 320mm. I was wondering if that would change with the extra fat tyres such as the WTB, but I guess it won't significantly.

  • WTB list an overall diameter of 685mm (+/-2mm) for the Horizon based on their drawing I have (19mm Int. rim)

  • ...which is exactly the same as the diameter quoted for the Schwalbe Big Apple 26x2.35"

  • 507 and 513 for mine on kitchen scales. Will check how accurate they are in the morning.

  • I get it at 325mm

  • Tested the Thunderburts on Sunday-
Rolling pretty fast for a mtb tire and turns the bike more into mtb. For going on more nasty trails it's nice and fine but still love the 40c -700 more in terms of rolling. Slightly lower bb made me hit some rocks.
But as an additional wheelset nice to have.

  • Looks fun!

  • Yeah it is - but I might get back on 33 cyclocross tires for this time of year and pull the fatties back out in spring ...

  • Pacenti Brevet rims can be ordered direct,
    machined brake track,
    19 mm internal,
    15 mm high.
    Stainless eyelets and 430g.
No mention of a price in the email I received.
Sounds more fun than my 550g Confrérie.

  • That sound good, but I'd take a pinch of salt, their last rims (PL23) have a tenancy to crack even if you have 32h and build it up perfectly;

Just looking at the image show you how thin it is to save weight.

    I guess they address this by making it beefier from 385g to 430g, which frankly a good solution;

There's one more rims I like the look of is the new SunXCD* 650b rims that weight a reasonable 490g

I currently ride on Grand Bois 650b rims that weight a reasonable 468g, and find it very well balanced in term of lifespan and strength (the Pacenti wear out quicker and need to be retired sooner due to less material on the braking surface), especially compared to the heavier Velo Orange one.

*a revival of the well respected Suntour company by the original president.

  • Cheers. Looks like sticking with 700c is the one (vagabond) for max clearance.

  • I'm putting a 650b roadish bike together around a charge plug frame. Not finished the build yet...

Have marathon 40-584 tyres in for now, they measure 38mm across as mounted on 28mm (external width) rims.. So a little narrow. I've had the 650b marathons since 2009 when they were literally the only slick in 650b available... Thousands of miles on them and still they refuse to show any wear at all ! 800g a piece is the penalty paid for that sort of protection though. TBH I think I need a slightly fatter tyre before the geo is correct

  • which rims? and are you using mega long drop brakes? Schwalbe always come up narrow .. there is a 42mm pasela in 650b now.

  • It's a disc Plug 5 ... After they recycled the model name.

Rims are tubeless commencal Alpha Enduro. Made by Alex.. Pinned but light and decent quality with eyelets

  • ah nice, post the results once you are done pls ..

  • Hi all, read through most of the thread and I think I have a candidate frame to dip my toe in. It's a fairdale Weekender and I'm going to get some of the bargain wheels planet x have going at the moment (I posted some in the non eBay deals thread)

Can you just have a look at the pictures of the rear clearance please and tell me what size tyres i might be able to go for? The tyres pictured are 700x35 cx tyres. I'm thinking gravel kings of horizons. Nothing too knobbly. Cheers

  • How far from the axle will the horizons be widest do you reckon? 330mm ish? I'll have a look tonight.

    Cheers

  • scroll up for the WTB cross section image and the rim will be 19mm smaller in radius .. could be tight, use a caliper .. also if 47mm dont fit there are 44mm gravel kings (slick).

  • Thanks, I'll have a look and report my results for future Weekenders.

  • Ok, I've plumped for that Vittoria Creed 650b wheelset from planet x for £99. Is there anything particularly awful about these that I should steer clear of? It would have to be particularly awful at that price to be fair as these are an intro wheelset for me.

    http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/WPVICRE/vittoria-creed-wheel-set

edit at 325mm from axle as mentioned by @pryally I measure 49.8mm. Too small for horizons right? I don't fully understand the effect the rim width has but will the 21mm internal Vittoria Creed make the tyre wider at its fattest point than the diagram above?

I'm in well above my head!

  • 49.8 > 47 ..

so should be ok, you'd be gambling though ..

My 1.75" 27.5 gravel king on DT Swiss 466D come in at 40mm. Lovely tyres for the money! Almost identical to the pricey compass tyres I have and lighter (and wider) then GB Hetre.

  • good find, I think I'll order some for my moots as I don't think the hozizons will fit and these are much cheaper! I'm going to set mine up tubeless - I assume you've used tubes?
