when I first got the frame , I knew it was unsual having not seen any ,
the vendor told me it belonged to a team rider , but no provenance
whilst at L' Eroica, a Californian rider came up to me with a nuovo mexico in same decor , with a riders name on it , I have never seen decor on retail frames

I checked the name J Nevens out , he rode for the 1985 Kwantum Decosol team , who all used frame in that colour ... and the head band posted would have been bang on period wise ...

    and in a badass pic...

Alex Colnago also confirmed bike at the factory , it is a Kwantum Decosol team bike , just got to try to nail who rode it .

  • One of these fellas;

    http://firstcycling.com/team.php?l=911&hva=normal

van der Poel definitely rode CX, but I think he'd have ridden a larger frame.

  • I was actually told it was his , but have no provenance , I will see if I can get contact with him

  • What size is the frame? I need to check, but I think he was 6' tall, and I've thought it would be too big for him. But back then the accepted wisdom was that you went down a size on a CX frame.

  • Hmm, 5' 11" it seems.

    Could have been his.

  • I'm 5'11 also )

  • They definitely rode that colour scheme in 1985. Some images on this page show it.

  • here's him in the 85 team card pic , the above is 84 decor

  • He was second at the CX World Champs in 1985. Maybe on this frame!

  • not a bad result! )

  • thanks for helping resolve the mystery!

  • so frame set is aprox 31 years young , still able to gain decent speeds

  • and the colour is the same I need for my Joop Zoetemelk world champ Colnago Super replica, so for me a step closer as well. Cheers mate :)

  • they only had that colour for the 1985 team, it has a sparkle/flake finish , not laquer esque like Sarroni red , who know's maybe able to find Adri and see

  • would like to meet Jan Raas , he had his hand in a few teams ,superconifex , word perfect , Novell , buckler , Rabobank

  • !

good you mention him now I have an excuse to post one of the best cycling pics I've ever seen

  • bet he knows where there is treasure. ;0)

  • Raas has become a hermit, he's refusing all contact with journos and people from the cycling world... so it will all remain secret I'm afraid

  • not surprising , weren't him and his wife victims of an armed home invasion ?

  • "..Raas and his wife Anja suffered an armed raid on their house in March 1994[3] and Raas decided he could no longer spend long periods away from home. He changed from sporting director to manager when Rabobank became the main sponsor in 1995. He spent eight years in this capacity until the end of 2003, the sponsor indicating that insoluble differences prompted Raas' departure.[4]...."

  • back in the eighties most Dutch and Belgian pro's did some cyclocross during winter (they didn't go on training camps in Spain or South Africa to maintain fitness) but only VDPoel was known as one because he was able to compete with the best. :) The others just did it not to get fat and to earn an extra sum of money (the most known CX riders got a "starting fee")

  • thanks Wim !

  • De Vlaeminck won a world, and a couple of nationals in cyclocross as well.
