• A large number of Poles came to the UK because they were fleeing the Nazis, and many were given shelter here because they couldn't return home. Some fought for the British - there was a Polish fighter squadron that helped us win the Battle of Britain.

    Because of this, the early 50s there were already about 170,000 Poles in Britain. More came after the EU enlargement because there was already a settled community, our economy was vibrant, and because they saw us as friends.
