I would think that for the scan they would have to sedate the cat (likely a large proportion of the cost)
This carries (not insignificant) risk. I would counter that you do not feel comfortable with the risks involved, especially given the lack of any signs of worsening condition.I am not a vet however.
Our cat was given six months to a year to live 4 years ago. He's got heart disease and at the time had a heart scan and blood tests before being prescribed two drugs (furosemide and fortekor). These have done the job and he's still a healthy cat who plays, eats well and who's condition has not degraded significantly. On occasion we've gone away and left him with friends who haven't managed to get him to swallow the pills as successfully and it's obvious the drugs are having a positive effect.
To cut to the chase our vet is now holding back his prescription unless he has a £500 heart scan. Is this on? Given the regular blood tests, our monitoring of his breathing and the fact he's far out lived his original assessment it seems alot of money to put him through a great deal of stress.
