Do people not shoulder check anymore before over taking / pulling out?
When did the majority of people ever do this?
I saw a fabulous 'collision' this morning. Ahead of me were two cyclists. One was quite a large chap on a hybrid with the seat about 10 inches too low, riding with his heels at about 5mph. He didn't look steady, or confident. Let's call him 'The Wobbler'. Approaching him from behind was a woman, maybe a partner, although they looked separate. They were riding one behind another anyway, reasonably close. Let's call her 'The Woman'. We are all approaching a side road on the left. Cyclists often pop out here from another busier road. As we approach, a cool singlespeed guy - let's call him that - can be seen about to emerge from said side road. He looks to his right and sees The Wobbler, and maybe The Woman, and decides that he has time to join our road. I would have too - The Wobbler was going pretty slowly after all, and there was plenty of time. The Wobbler, however, gets spooked by the presence of Cool Singlespeed Guy in the side road and slams on the brakes. The Woman screams 'Stop!' (at whom?) and a low speed rear ending occurs, and the predictable sound of an entanglement of cheap bikes.
I'd seen The Wobbler and decided to give him a wide berth as I overtook - just before the side road. Cool Singlespeed Guy emerges from the side road anyway - The Wobbler and The Woman are at least 15m away in any case - wondering what the fuss was about.
Cool Singlespeed Guy (and me) ride on in serene smugness.
Do people not shoulder check anymore before over taking / pulling out? And do people not realise a bright yellow jacket does not replace lights?
I can just about put up with twats not indicating before turning if they actually do a shoulder check as it's kind of an indication (far from ideal, but at least I know to stay far away from them in case they make a move), but not shoulder checking, nothing? I don't read mind and I would quite like to get to where I need to get to in 1 piece and not swearing.
