I see they will require a fair bit of work and there are some dents to sort out but they are in my size. Would you accept £600 if I take both of them? I can collect.
-
• #6
Yes they will need work, and I think the price is reasonable. I have PM'd you.

This was a real bargain. They don't need much work. If you "restore" the Magnum Bonum you should be drawn and quartered. It's original finish. Neutralize any rust, give it a few coats of wax. Just add suitable parts with some patina and you have a bike worth 1,000 pounds. I would have paid 500 for the M B quite happily. (but I was asleep).

It seems i have made a gross error in judgement. I posted a couple of threads asking for help on valueing these frames, they seem to go between 400-600 on ebay and here in the past. I assumed being small frames requiring restoration and without badges that they would be worth less.
It seems i could have asked for more but i dont think it is ok or in the spirit of this forum to bump prices up or go back on agreed sales. If it falls through for any reason i will let you all know.

fair play !

Well, you are truly a gentleman, portvelo. Many people would have withdrawn the sale and re-thought this. I haven't read the earlier threads but I hope you were not mislead on this forum, but I doubt that is the case, or if it is, it was likely not intentional. If the sale falls through I would be happy to buy the MB at fair market value. Anyhow, you are an example of honest dealing for all on the forum, and a great shining example of why this is still, in my view, the best forum around.

If restored these would fetch a small fortune. People go mad for curly and these were the second "fanciest" frames they ever built (I've got a bigger one). I've seen much inferior straight stay BJ built frames go for twice this... ah well.
-
• #19
Twice as much? So I should be asking for 600 per frame minimum...?
-
• #20
That is a huge difference.

After some consideration, and after speaking to Velocio, I have decided it is not in my interest to sell the frames at the original price as the demand for these is higher than i expected and it appears I have definitely misjudged their value. I have made some phone calls to gauge value better and have come to a decision.
While this might aggravate some people, I am within my right to do so.
Both frames are now available to purchase at an updated price. Please PM and comment with DIBS.
Magnum Bonum - £600.
Experto Crede - £500Collect in Edinburgh, or can be posted at a cost.

• #22
Out of interest, how much did you pay your neighbour for job lot of bikes originally...?
-
• #23
I am selling on her behalf, the bikes belonged to her husband who died 2 years ago. I was going to buy them off her, then we discussed and decided it was best to list them and split the sale.
-
• #24
Fair play to you then, and GLWS.

For sale are two very smart but very small (and genuine) mid-late 1950s Hetchins Frames.
Small areas of rust are visible but nothing detrimental to integrity, these frames were a barn find and had not been in use for at least 30 years. I have cleaned as best i can, but have not wanted to interfere too much, I had considered getting them restored, but thought it might be a fun project for someone else, they can fetch some good money once restored but I have far too many projects on the go at the moment.
Frameset 1.
1959-60 Hetchins Magnum Bonum (Black with gold lug lining)
Size: (50cm seat tube c-t) (55cm Top Tube (c-c)
Frame Number: H28122 (confirmed Genuine)
This is arguably the more valuable of the two frames, being a fancier design and second from the top model (magnum opus).
£SOLD
Frameset 2.
1955-56 Hetchins Experto Crede (Blue with gold lug lining)
Size: (53cm seat tube c-t) (57cm Top Tube c-c)
Frame Number: H25185 (confirmed Genuine)
This is a lovely blue colour but I don't believe it has its original paint, restoring this would a be wise idea and the forks were originally chromed, I am guessing the rear stays also were.
£500
Collection in Edinburgh or can post for £30.
