  • Anyone have any suggestions for a cheap ish smartphone? I'm on a sim only contract and my slightly abused HTC One Mini 2 (stupid name) is on it's last legs and I'm now struggling to get it to charge properly/at all.

Must have 4G capabilities and be wifi hotspot-able, it'll by my only source of internet. Not bothered about a mega massive screen - the current one is 4.5" I think. Something that doesn't run REALY slowly would be a good upgrade for me too!

  • ^ ha. Shit phone. I'm finally getting rid in a couple of weeks.

Currently: turns on - uses 5%; do 10 mins browsing - uses 5-10%; ride to work listening to podcast and strava recording - uses 40%. At 45% battery remaining it shuts down.

Can't wait to have a phone that is actually mobile and can use while away from a charger.

  • Wow, that sounds worse than mine!

  • Between s7 edge and one+3. Which is better to upgrade from.an s5? Contract with three has ended so rolling month thing atm and they aint being nice to offer any discount do bun em. Only o2 are offering the op3 though so another ? Is do they come unlocked?

  • I got me a google pixel c tablet. It's very good, if a bit heavy. Would recommend if anyone is thinking of getting an android tablet.

  • Having said that ipads are still kind of better tablet things.

  • Plus. Anyone know the going rate for an s5

  • Maybe see if you can find one of the discontinued Nexus 5X s. I like mine and there seems to be plenty of others happy on here. Plenty quick, good battery life. Not used hot spot on mine, but should be fine

  • The Pixel is getting insanely good reviews. The Verge and Wired have pretty much declared it the best android phone ever and Ars Technica are a little more reserved but still overwhelmingly positive.

  • yeah but dolla

  • Agreed. I refuse to spend that much on a phone. Even 400 is too much but options are dwindling. OP3 next for me, and that's with some bitterness.

The Nexus 5 was the sweet spot.

  • Nexus 5 was perfect. Right now, it's either the iPhone or Pixel.
Yeah they cost a bit much but...

  • Got an email Tuesday morning saying it had been delayed and would be dispatched Wednesday to arrive Friday. Which would be annoying since it's being delivered to the Amazon Lockers at work and I'm off Friday and Monday...

  • I ordered one too. Didn't get an email but expecting a delivery on Thursday at work (according to Amazon). Of course Thursday is the only day I'm not in the office.

  • I'm glad i picked up the nexus 5 a few weeks back! The pixel does look at and sound like its amazing. The price is high but they so are the top of the lines Galaxy and Iphones and people buy them.

  • Just been having a bit of a play with the Google Assistant (via the Allo app). It's kind of good but you still need to formulate queries kind of carefully "When does the British Museum close" brings up a webpage with the opening hours and days. "What time does the British Museum close" gets you the response "It is open till 5.30 today". Further asking "How do I get there" then brings up directions without having to mention the British Museum again.

Asking "when is my next flight?" brings up details of my next flight, as does asking "When do I go to New York"

It doesn't seem to interact with calendars other than the Google calendar which is a bit crap (all my stuff is on an exchange calendar which my phone has access to).

At the moment it's OK but the faff of it not always giving you what you want doesn't necessarily mean it's any quicker than just searching normally.

  • It's here.

Makes my OnePlusTwo look a bit rubbish though.

Impressed so far. Tiny bit plasticy but really good for the money.

  • My Nexus 6P now has Android 7.1.1

  • Went swimming with my Sony smartwatch3 on yesterday. It's supposed to be waterproof to 2m for one hour. Ten minutes of splashing around in my depth killed it.

    Not happy.

  • Will they warranty that?

    Running a beta?

Do not tell the warranty people you went swimming.

It is IP58 rated, with technically means "dust resistant and can be immersed in 1.5 meters of freshwater for up to 30 minutes".

It's good to be dropped in the sink, but not for swimming as the device isn't pressure rated against water and the impact of a front crawl would exceed the operating params.

If you're going to warranty it: You took it off to do the dishes, it was next to the sink, it fell in and now it doesn't work.

  • Best method of rooting an S5, thinking not to upgrade to new phone - so maybe I root it? im suffering from the death touch screen where it brings green lines or someething screen when i dim the screen res etc

  • IP68. But I think that was a typo on your part.

I don't think I'll be warranty covered as I got it second hand on eBay.

  • I googled.

The 6 implies the dust protectiveness.
The 8 is the water protectiveness.

I think 8 is manufacturer determined, but specific to a task, and should imply above IPX7 but actually does not because usage scenarios differ.

Simply: No smart watch is a swimming/diving watch, unless you've bought a Suunto and maybe one of the Garmins (though I'm not totally sure on that either).
