• I've taken the freehub off, adjusted each leaf spring (which are in the hub body) and put it back together, hasn't helped. Starting to think it might be the bearings in the hub now, so have bought new ones to put in and see if that helps

  • At the bottom the chain doesn't immediately slip over the tooth, only when the tension forces it on.

I just had a look at it and this appears to be what's happening. Any idea how to remedy it?
Is it a case of sucking it up and hoping it beds in, or will another type of cog be better?

I feel like the chain is lubricated enough, but would putting a layer of lubricant on the cog help lessen the snap and therefore the noise?

  • The profile of the teeth looks quite square, which is what appears to be the problem.

I suppose it might bed in, but in the mean time that might trash your chain.

Suck it up and get a Phil Wood.

  • Hi guys. Every time I pedal hard on left pedal, it clicks, which I can feel in my right foot at the same position of the pedal stroke.

I have tried, cleaning BB, reinstalling. Greasing/cleaning chainring bolts, tightening headset.

The click comes at exactly the same point in the stroke, so it can't be the spokes.

I have also repositioned the chain, in case it may have been a tight link.

    I'm at a loss.

You say that but....this weekend I thought I would get all brave and change from the 18t to 17t phil wood sprocket.

TBF the 17t is fairly worn (teeth are a bit pointy) and I was last using it on a bike with a 1/2 link chain. Fitted it all up yesterday and everything went together well. Couple of rotations on my stand to check alignment and parked it ready for this morning.

Pulled off the drive this morning and it sounded like a fecking gatling gun had been attached to my drivetrain, It got louder under load so i got off and fiddled around (having no idea what I was looking for). Chain line is good, and everything is the same except the change from 18t to 17t....managed to micro adjust it enough to almost totally eliminate the noise but it’s still there under heavy load.

Is this due to the cog being well used and being previously coupled with a 1/2 link chain ?

  • Beats me! Chain tension?

My default position is that if I have a problem, it's not the PW.

  • PW is all I have ever used (been lucky that they have been on bikes i have bought). I have never had this problem before, and that was all i could think of...Have 17,18 & 19t cogs and the 17t is the most worn. May just buy a new one and see if it fixes it, £45 for a new cog after 6 years is hardly the end of the world.

  • Pedal bearings or something fouling on the pedal (loose straps, buckle, etc.). Try pedals on a different bike?

Edit: other ideas... loose chainring, pedals not tight enough, crank square taper fooked?

    Loose-ball or cartridge bb?

  • Just stumbled on this thread - appears i am not alone. Recently put on a new Izumi chain, I also have a 17t Phil Wood sprocket, chain line nice and straight etc and now it clicks like a freewheel -so consistent clicking on what sounds like every tooth.

Thanks for the pointers above, will have a good look when i should be working this afternoon to see if it is snagging on the teeth, had a look before but couldn't see anything wrong but now i know what i'm looking for...

  • Izumi chains are just noisy! Mine was quieter after a while...

  • sugino 75 non drive side arm has come loose twice in a fortnight now despite a very heavy tightening of the axle bolt. end is nigh? :(

  • Edit: moved to new thread as it's not really a mystery noise, more of a chainline question.

  • I've just built up this https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/284163

It's had a drivechain rattle from the start. At first i thought it was a creaky BB from a ham fisted install but after having it on a stand and spinning the cranks/wheels I think it could be the rear wheel hub.

It's more of a rattle than a creak, and doesn't need to be under heavy load (ie me pedalling) to make the noise. Simply spinning the cranks. However, when i remove the chain and just spin the wheel it doesn't make the sound.

The wheels are second hand. Should I just get the rear hub serviced? The only other option at this stage is re-installing the BB.

  • I really don't think it is. But i think there might be a stiff link?

  • Anyone else experienced a rattling noise with shimano r400 levers? One of mine (pretty much new) is rattling and it's driving me up the wall. Have tightened anything obviously tightenable.

  • Having some odd noise issues on my carbon Look 585. Only happens at some pace and seems to correlate to rougher ground - it sounds like it is coming from the front end (but I know that these things can be deceptive).

The noise is kind of like an airflow or friction noise - I would have thought there was something caught / rubbing (e.g. flap of plastic in a wheel or something) but I've checked everything I can think of. It's weird and it's making me worry! Any thoughts? I appreciate that this description probably does not make it easy to diagnose...

  • Are you wearing a helmet when this noise happens?

  • Can't work out if I'm being mocked... sadly no, it has appeared both with /without helmet

  • My old 555 used to make some weird noises at higher speeds, and I always assumed it was the cable routing hole on the headtube

  • Tape up certain part or put a rubber budge to see if it make any difference to the noise.

  • Hmmm some experimenting but still nowt makes a difference. Seems to get louder as each ride progresses. WTF is going on? Cheers for all the suggestions so far...

  • old post I know, but yes, and fixed it by peeling back the rubber hoods and adding a small dollop of grease/lube to the internals

  • Ha, in the end I fixed it by getting some needle nose pliers and pulling out the bit of grey plastic in the top of the lever. Turns out it's kind of vestigial.

  • https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/293649/#comment13253455 separate thread about my SS drivetrain clicking and creaking.

turned out to be the freewheel being on its last legs - teeth were a bit worn and externally looked fine, but internals were shot which meant there was a bit of play, hence the creaking/clicking. The new ENO I have on there made a huge difference (old one was a Halo clickster)

  • nitto bars b260aa risers and a cinelli vai stem. these have been creaking for a while (3 months?) under more strenuous efforts, (up steeper hills etc) I tried re-installing etc a few times to no avail, sort of got used to it. anyway in the last few days this has suddenly stopped, and it's put the shits right up me. is my bike about to spontaneously combust?
